Filaree Farm
Meet Watershine Woods
Welcome to Filaree Farm
Filaree Farm, was the one hundredth organic grower to be certified by Washington State in 1977. Today Watershine Woods and her staff organically farm 18 acres on a sunny bench-land above the town of Okanogan. Although they grow a variety of fruits, their specialty is garlic, primarily organic seed stock for gardens and small farms. Filaree Farm is not only well-known in Washington State for its 100 unique strains of garlic, people from all over the United States have discovered these “masters” of garlic.

Growing Philosophy
“I like to define farming as nurturing miracles. We have come to understand that soil and habitat are the foundation of healthy agriculture. Everything we do must nurture and improve them to provide for this wonderful miracle of renewal and growth.”
-- Watershine Woods
Innovative Approach to Water Conservation
Filaree Farm uses ten tons of organically grown and chopped alfalfa mulch on its garlic fields. This gives the plants much needed nitrogen while doing an incredible job of holding in moisture. Bordering the south and western sides of their orchards they have planted taller deciduous trees that provide shade to keep their fruit from sun-burning which eliminates the need for using sprinklers on hot days. The root systems from these trees also hold moisture in the ground.
Pest Management and Soil Care
Watershine chooses varieties of trees and plants that are more resistant to pest outbreaks, as well as working to provide habitat for beneficial insects and birdlife. The farm uses pheromone strips for coddling moth control. They use certified organic soil amendments based on the results of annual soil tests and regularly rotate their crops.
Genetic Diversity
Filaree Farm is a role model for promoting genetic diversity, growing over 100 varieties of garlic, and 40 different kind of apples, many of which are heirloom varieties dating back 100 to 200 years. They have grown their knowledge surrounding the cultivation of garlic to the point that they are now a national resource.
