Twin Tail Farm
Meet Mariah Cornwoman
Welcome to Twin Tail Farm
Twin Tail Farm, Mariah Cornwoman and Bob Raymer's “cathedral in the woods,” is nestled in the dry-land forest belt, about 15 miles east of Tonasket. This farm is a role model for sustainability, from their off-the-grid solar powered cabin, to their spring-fed, water cistern/catch-basin irrigation system. Here along the sometimes drought stricken creek, they grow Shitake mushrooms and medicinal herbs. They also farm about two acres of certified organic row crops.
Growing Philosophy
“Organic farming gives me a deep abiding connection to this wonderful land. I can’t imagine being on this planet without my connection to the land.”
--Mariah Cornwoman
Products Available
Row crops, medicinal and culinary herbs, shitake mushrooms, flowers, herbal teas, tinctures, pie filing, jam, and dehydrated fruit.
A Student of Agriculture
Mariah achieved her degree in Plant Science/Pomology from the University of California, Davis, and continued to conduct organic agricultural research at the university for eight years. She then moved to North Central Washington where she served as the Certifying Agent for the WSDA Organic Program for eight years. Along with their farm business, Mariah provides a soil testing service and is a highly valued asset to growers in her region.
Creek and Forest Restoration
Bob and Mariah applied for and received a Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program grant through the Natural Resources Conservation Service. With the proceeds of this grant they were able to buy the fencing materials and install 1,500 feet of fence to keep range cattle out of their stream course. The results have been miraculous, giving them the opportunity to establish mushroom colonies and cultivate medicinal herbs in an area once trampled and de-vegetated. They are also replanting native grasses along all the decommissioned logging roads that crisscross their property.
A True Appreciation for Diversity
Bob and Mariah are cultivating 130 different species of crops. But the true marvel is what grows wild in this dry-land forest, and Mariah’s deep knowledge of and her concern for the local flora. To walk this land with Mariah offers one a deeper understanding of what it means to be a good steward of the land.
