BelleWood Acres

Meet John & Dorie Belisle

Welcome to BelleWood Acres

In 1996, John and Dorie Belisle came to Whatcom County with the goal of growing the county’s “best apples in the best way possible.” Today they have 24,000 Jonagold and Honeycrisp apple trees in a vibrant orchard that is Food Alliance and Salmon Safe certified.

Bellewood Acres is located along the banks of Ten Mile Creek and produces 16 varieties of apples, two varieties of pears, pumpkins, decorative gourds and corns, and fall flowers.  Along with selling apples, Bellewood Acres produces fresh apple cider and dehydrated apple chips.

Growing Philosophy

“As we began to have people come to the farm and we began working with our local stores, we realized that our customers were interested in how we grow our fruit and manage our land. It became important to us to tell 'our story' and educate our customers. In all of our outreach, we stress the agriculture and environmental practices that enable us to have healthy farms and watersheds.”

 -- Dorie Belisle

Great Fruit and Ciders

Bellewood Acres has a deep commitment to providing high quality and great tasting fruit and ciders. John and Dorie's business mottos are "Grown with Care, Picked for Flavor" and "Taste the difference Freshness Makes". Once you try one of their apples or ciders, you’ll know they’re serious about their commitment to quality.

Integrated Pest Management

John and Dorie firmly believe in “Integrated Pest Management- an information-based decision-making process that provides the least toxic solution to pest problem.”  IPM is based on information: pest identification, detection and monitoring of pest populations, understanding of tolerance levels, knowledge of the pest and its ecological interactions, and ecologically sound management methods of reducing pests to tolerable levels. With the use of IPM, they strive to obtain healthier ecosystems without compromising effective pest management.

Saving Farmland and Wildlife Habitat

John and Dorie’s passion goes beyond providing the best tasting apples in Whatcom County. They are committed to treating their staff, trees, land, watercourses, and wildlife with the greatest of care and respect. In 2001, they were selected as the Whatcom County Conservation District’s Cooperators of the Year. Their commitment to environmental stewardship has resulted in their orchard's certification by the Food Alliance and as the Northwest’s first “Salmon Safe” apple orchard by the Stewardship Partners.

They are also committed to the community. John serves on the Whatcom County Planning Commission, the Whatcom Agriculture Preservation Committee, and Whatcom Farm Friends. Dorie is Project Manager for the Ten Mile Creek Watershed Project.
