Growing Philosophy
"We’ve been losing our farmland and farmers at an alarming pace. The culture of agriculture must be secured. New farmers can’t afford to learn to farm and pay for land at the same time and farmers need to have access to land without going broke buying it."
-- Nash Huber
Managing for Healthy Soil
At the heart of their operation truly lies their ability to maintain their soil’s quality over time. This is critical not only for the farm’s viability, but for the native plants and animals that inhabit the land they caretake. Extensive cover-crops are planted to enhance the quality of their soil, and they harvest enough cover-crop seed to meet 80% of their planting needs. Keeping the microorganism community in mind, they discontinued their plowing practices several years ago, as the technique was burying the soil’s live organisms so deep, the soils organic matter was unable to rebuild itself in less than a full season.
Nature Provides the Answer for Pest Management
Beneficial insect application and refuge creation, lure crop planting, crop placement, and the use of re-may all play major roles in their chemical-free pest management. Using mother nature’s natural weapons against destructive insects takes experimentation and patience and is a delicate dance between variable factors such as weather and soil
The Importance of Wildlife on the Farm
Protecting and enhancing the habitats of endangered or threatened species is of paramount importance to their operation. All of the pieces of land they farm have migratory birds and waterfowl habitat. Salmon habitat is also monitored and protected by their use of setbacks, lack of river and creek crossings, and by the buffers they maintain. They do not use any chemicals or pesticides in their operation and take care to ensure that all are practices are safe for the wildlife with whom they share the land.
