Growing Philosophy
“If you farm the same land intensively, you have to be conservative to keep the land fertile.”
--Blong Cha
Low Impact Farming Methods
Blong uses no commercial fertilizers, insecticides, or herbicides on his farm. To add nutrients to the soil he uses composted grass clippings, cow manure, and tilled-in crop stubble. Aphids seem to be the farm’s only real pest and only infest greens early in the season. Blong uses black plastic covering which creates enough heat to make the insects leave but not negatively impact his crop. Weeds are controlled by rototilling.
Water Quality
Blong’s Garden is located along the banks of the Snoqualmie River and is often subjected to floods. Blong’s farming methods and care of his land, ensure that any water or soil that drains off-site won’t harm fish or wildlife.
