Growing Philosophy
"We think that having a strong sense of ethics and morality is absolutely necessary to improving stewardship. We strive to give the greatest moral consideration to our relationship with the land."
-- Nate O’Neil
Pest Management and Crop Diversity
Frog’s Song Farm is pesticide, herbicide, and fungicide free. They practice propane burning to control potato blight. They use a balance of crop diversity, crop rotation and cover cropping to enrich the soil and have created buffers and tree-breaks that provide habitat beneficial to insects, birds, and bats.
Closing the Loop
Frog’s Song Farm has worked hard to build up a good "bank" of soil. Their practices have progressed over the years from low-testing and inputs to testing and amending with lime and other inputs such as sul-po-mag. Their current practice is to use manure and compost generated locally on Fir Island.
Fostering Wildlife Habitat and Salmon Recovery
Nate and Shannon understand the importance of wildlife as a beneficial element in sustainable farming. They have installed bat boxes and planted borders and boundaries with firs, cedars, and shrubs to provide homes for beneficial critters. Nate is also very excited about working to return salmon stocks to Dry Slough which borders his farm. He envisions his farm as an oasis that is welcoming to wildlife.
