Growing Philosophy
"One of our foundational principles is to focus on
local markets. We chose our farm's location to be not more than 20
miles from our most prominate markets. This allows us to supply our
customers with the freshest product they can get while minizing
transportation, thus enhancing fuel conservation, air quality, and
human time."
Holistic Approach
Mother Flight Farm is Washington State certified as an organic farm, but Glen and Charlotte's care of the soil, water, and wildlife goes beyond their organic certification. They operate their farm with a passion and care for the multiple communities they serve, including the plant and animail life that inhabits their farm, and the people that benefit from the healthy food they provide.
The Quality of the Soil
Glen has spent years studying, thinking, and experimenting, with the end result of improving what was already great soil. He applies only stable nutrient-rich compost and slow release nutriets such as feather meal, bone meal, and dolomite lime. Cover crops such as fava beans, silage corn, and hay also help. "Our top soil is 3 1/2 % organic matter and our plants really respond"
Pest Management
Glen and Charlotte believe that crop diversity and constant rotation are their greatest assets in preventing damaging outbreaks of pests. The variety of vegetables and fruits also lengthens their growing and selling season. Cover cropping and inter-cropping along with maintaining healthy soils and predator -friendly habitat balances their systems of pest management.
Fish and Wildlife
The wind breaks and planted buffers along Kikialus Slough provide excellent habitat for a variety of bird and animal life. "Our pond is attracting nesting pairs of migratory waterfowl as well as frogs, dragonfiles and other pond-dwelling critters." It is Glen's hope that he and other farmers along Kikialus and Dry Sloughs can work together to return them to their historic state as fish-bearing habitat for salmon and trout.
