Visions of the Federal Farm Bill
American agriculture faces new challenges which may influence the next Federal Farm Bill. Our nation recently moved from a net exporter to a net importer of food. Farm prices are so low that many farmers find it difficult to remain in business. Land ownership is out of reach for many while the environmental burdens of ownership drive others to sell. And we face challenges to our commodity suppport programs from the international marketplace - all at a time of rising Federal deficits. What can we expect from the new Farm Bill? What are the opportunities it presents & the practical realities we must face? What positions will be taken and arguments made by the varied interests likely to influence the debate? Are there coalitions to be formed and agreements to be reached that might help farmers here in Washintong and nationwide? This Washington State conference on U.S. Farm policy features addresses by Director Valoria Loveland, WSDA, and Congressman Doc Hastings.
