Criteria and how to apply or nominate a farmer or rancher for Farming & the Environment's annual Vim Wright Stewardship Award

Who Can Apply:
If you are a Washington State farmer or rancher who is a good steward of the land, or you know someone who is, you can apply yourself or nominate them for our annual Vim Wright Stewardship Award. Both individuals and teams can apply. We've extended the deadline. Applications are now due May 19, 2008.
Criteria:
- The farmer or rancher's gross farm sales equal 75% or more of their total income.
- Follow growing practices that meet Farming & the Environment's Stewardship Principles.
- Be actively engaged in educating the community about stewardship, sharing your knowledge and experience with your peers and others in your community.
- Use marketing strategies that use stewardship practices to add value to the products you sell.
- Use the best available science to improve stewardship as part of your ongoing development of new management practices or systems.
The Process
- Farmers or ranchers can click here to download the nomination form. Applications must be received by our deadline of May 19, 2008.
- Our Stewardship Committee, comprised of farmers and environmentalists, will select the top candidates for a farm tour in mid to late May.
- Following a tour of all selected farms, the Stewardship Committee will select a winner and two runner-ups.
- All winners will receive a cash award, media coverage, and complimentary tickets to the award dinner on September 9, 2007 to celebrate and reward their exemplary stewardship practices.
